Supplements and Medicines: How to Check Memopezil Against What You Already Take
Before taking Memopezil with any medicine, check five groups: blood thinners, diabetes drugs, losartan, thyroid medicine and drugs that act on acetylcholine, such as those for Alzheimer's, glaucoma and bladder control. Bring the bottle's Supplement Facts to a pharmacist, and never stop prescribed medicine on your own.

§ 01Why it matters
Can supplements interact with medicines?
Yes, and "natural" does not mean safe to combine.
NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says supplements can interact with medicines, and NCCIH advises telling every health care provider about every supplement you use. Plant extracts such as bacopa, rhodiola and ginseng contain active compounds, so they can change how drugs are absorbed, broken down or felt. (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need to Know) (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely)
The Memopezil label asks pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first. Taking a prescription medicine usually means a medical condition exists, so the caution covers most people on regular drugs.

§ 02The five groups
Medicine groups to check with Memopezil's ingredients
| Medicine group | Ingredient involved | Why ask |
|---|---|---|
| Warfarin and other blood thinners | Panax ginseng, bacopa | Ginseng may interfere with clotting; bacopa may change levels of drugs handled by P450 enzymes (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (MSD Manual, Bacopa) |
| Diabetes medicines | Panax ginseng | Might lower blood sugar (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) |
| Losartan | Rhodiola | An interaction has been reported (NCCIH, Rhodiola) |
| Thyroid medicine | Bacopa | May raise thyroid hormone levels (MSD Manual, Bacopa) |
| Acetylcholine-related drugs | Bacopa | May add to cholinergic drugs and blunt anticholinergic ones (MSD Manual, Bacopa) |
| Sedatives and sleep aids | L-theanine, rhodiola | No serious interaction found in our sources, but effects on alertness are worth discussing |
§ 03The acetylcholine group
Why memory and bladder drugs show up on the list
Bacopa may raise acetylcholine, and many drugs push that same chemical up or down.
Drugs for Alzheimer's disease, such as donepezil, raise acetylcholine. Drugs for overactive bladder, some allergy and sleep medicines, and some drugs for glaucoma or Parkinson's disease work in other directions on the same system. The MSD Manual notes that bacopa may blunt the anticholinergic ones and add to the cholinergic ones. In plain words, the capsule could weaken one kind of medicine or strengthen another. (MSD Manual, Bacopa) (MedlinePlus, Donepezil)
That is why our claim check urges anyone on donepezil to speak to the prescriber first. The same applies to the other drugs in this group.
§ 04At the pharmacy
What to bring and what to ask a pharmacist
Bring the bottle
The Supplement Facts panel lists branched chain amino acids 540 mg, bacopa 200 mg, rhodiola 100 mg, L-theanine 100 mg and Panax ginseng 90 mg per two capsules.
List every medicine
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, eye drops, patches and other supplements.
Ask three questions
Does any ingredient interact with my medicines? Does my condition rule any ingredient out? What should I look out for in the first two weeks?
Ask about timing
The label says to take two capsules 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. Ask whether that timing suits your medicines.
§ 05How interactions happen
Three ways a supplement can change a medicine
Most interactions work by one of three routes, and knowing them makes the pharmacist's answers easier to follow.
It changes how the drug is cleared
Many drugs are broken down by liver enzymes. A plant compound that speeds or slows those enzymes can raise or lower the drug level. The MSD Manual flags this for bacopa and drugs handled by P450 enzymes. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
It adds to the drug's own effect
Ginseng and a diabetes medicine may both lower blood sugar, so the sum can be larger than either alone. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng)
It works against the drug
A supplement that acts on the same system in the opposite direction can blunt a medicine, which is the concern with bacopa and anticholinergic drugs. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
None of these is certain for any one person. They are reasons for a check, not predictions. A pharmacist can see your full list and tell you whether the pairing is a known problem, a theoretical one, or nothing to worry about.

Surgery, pregnancy and other situations
Tell the surgical team about every supplement before an operation. Ginseng's possible effect on clotting is a reason many clinics ask patients to stop certain supplements ahead of surgery, and your surgeon will say how long before. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng)
The label asks pregnant and nursing mothers to consult a physician, and NCCIH notes that little is known about rhodiola in pregnancy and breastfeeding while Asian ginseng may be unsafe in pregnancy. Children under 18 are outside the label's intended use. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (NCCIH, Rhodiola)
If you have an autoimmune condition, ask before using ginseng, since NCCIH says it may worsen autoimmune disorders. If you have a thyroid condition, the bacopa note applies. If you have a history of bleeding problems, mention it to the pharmacist. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
§ 07Warning signs
When to stop and call someone
- Unusual bruising, bleeding, black stools or nosebleeds, especially on a blood thinner.
- Shakiness, sweating or confusion that could signal low blood sugar in someone on diabetes medicine.
- A slow or racing heartbeat, fainting, or severe dizziness.
- Rash, swelling or trouble breathing. Call 911 for the last two.
Report a reaction to a clinician, and to the FDA's Safety Reporting Portal. (FDA, How to Report a Problem) Our side effects page lists everyday effects as well.
§ 08A steady rule
Do not trade your medicine for a supplement
Make it a habit to update your medicine list whenever anything changes, including over-the-counter products and supplements you stop. A current list in your wallet or phone helps in an emergency room as well as at the pharmacy.
A supplement is not a substitute for a medicine a clinician prescribed. Keep taking prescribed drugs exactly as directed, and let your clinician decide any change. If a supplement and a drug seem to clash, the answer is a conversation, not a guess. (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need to Know)
FAQ
Supplements and medicines: your questions
Can I take Memopezil with blood thinners?
Ask your prescriber first. Ginseng may interfere with clotting, and bacopa may change levels of drugs handled by P450 enzymes, such as warfarin. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
Can I take Memopezil with diabetes medicine?
Ask first. Ginseng might lower blood sugar, which could add to the effect of diabetes drugs. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng)
Does rhodiola interact with losartan?
NCCIH reports an interaction between rhodiola and losartan. Ask your prescriber before combining them. (NCCIH, Rhodiola)
Can bacopa affect thyroid medicine?
The MSD Manual says bacopa may raise thyroid hormone levels, so people on thyroid treatment should ask first. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
Should I tell my doctor about supplements?
Yes. NCCIH advises telling every provider about every supplement you take. Bring the bottle's Supplement Facts panel. (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely)
Can I take Memopezil with other supplements?
Ask a pharmacist. Overlap is possible, such as extra ginseng, rhodiola or amino acids from other products, and the label says not to exceed the recommended dose.
Is it safe for older adults on many medicines?
More medicines raise the chance of an interaction, so a pharmacist review of the full list is worth doing before starting.
