Bacopa Monnieri in Memopezil: 200 mg Against the Research

Quick answer

Memopezil's bacopa monnieri line is 200 mg of extract per serving, about 19% of the capsule. A 12-week trial used 300 mg a day, and a 2026 review of 29 trials found working-memory gains only at 600 mg or more. Bacopa can upset the stomach and affect some medicines.

§ 01What it is

What is bacopa monnieri, and why is it in Memopezil?

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping water plant that Ayurvedic medicine calls brahmi, and it is the most memory-focused herb in the formula.

Memopezil's label lists "Bacopa Monnieri Extract" at 200 mg per serving, which is two capsules. It does not say how the extract is standardized, so you cannot tell how much of the active plant compounds, called bacosides, each capsule holds. (Memopezil sales page)

The sales page says bacopa "supports memory and learning, keeping the mind sharp." That is a sales claim. The MSD Manual puts it more carefully: no high-quality studies show bacopa improves memory or cognitive function or treats any disorder, though small trials show a modest benefit in healthy adults. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)

That sentence is a fair summary of where bacopa stands. It is among the better-studied herbs in the formula, and the study base is still small.

§ 03Dose

The label dose against the studied dose

One serving a day holds 200 mg. A 12-week trial gave 300 mg a day. A 2026 review defined 600 mg or more as the "high dose" group, and that was the group with the working-memory gains. (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial) (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo)

Violet bars: what one serving holds, as printed on the label. Mint bars: the daily amount of that ingredient alone in a study; the light extension marks the higher group. We found no verified studied dose for the BCAA blend, rhodiola extract or Panax ginseng extract in our sources, so they are not drawn. A study of one extract is not a study of this product.

So the capsule sits below both marks. This is not a safety problem. It means the trials we cite do not describe what two Memopezil capsules deliver. Higher bacopa doses also bring more side effects, so the answer is not to take more. The label tells you to stay within the recommended dose.

§ 04Three studies

What do bacopa trials show?

Small gains in some measures, no gains in others, and results that depend on the dose.

2014 pooled analysis. Nine placebo-controlled trials with 518 people, all 12 weeks or longer. Pooled results showed a faster Trail B test and a shorter choice reaction time, so bacopa may improve the speed of attention. The authors said a large head-to-head trial was still needed. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analysis)

2025 trial. A 12-week trial gave 300 mg a day to 101 adults aged 40 to 70 who reported memory and attention problems. The groups did not differ on verbal learning, attention or working memory, which were the main outcomes. The bacopa group did report greater drops in stress reactivity and fatigue after a demanding task, and more side effects, mostly digestive complaints and headaches. (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)

2026 review. Twenty-nine randomized trials with 2,107 healthy adults. High-dose bacopa improved working memory over placebo, over ginkgo and over low-dose bacopa. Low-dose bacopa beat placebo on delayed memory. There was no difference for sustained attention, selective attention or processing speed. The authors said the lack of direct comparisons limits the evidence. (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo)

Taken together, these studies are cautious good news for bacopa itself and no news at all for Memopezil. All of them were in healthy adults or adults with mild complaints. None was in people with dementia.

§ 05Safety

Bacopa side effects and drug interactions

The MSD Manual lists stomach upset, nausea and dry mouth as the common adverse effects. The 2025 trial found more digestive complaints and headaches in the bacopa group than in the placebo group. (MSD Manual, Bacopa) (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)

The bigger caution is medicines. Bacopa can raise acetylcholine, a chemical messenger. That may weaken anticholinergic drugs, which include some bladder, allergy and sleep medicines. It may also add to cholinergic drugs, such as those for glaucoma or Alzheimer's disease. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)

  • It may raise thyroid hormone levels, so tell your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine.
  • It may change the level of drugs handled by cytochrome P450 liver enzymes, warfarin among them.
  • Never stop a prescribed memory medicine because of a supplement.

The label asks anyone with a known medical condition to see a physician first. For bacopa that advice is practical, not boilerplate. Our side effects page covers the other four lines.

§ 06A common comparison

Bacopa vs ginkgo biloba

People often ask which is better. Ginkgo is not in Memopezil, but the question is fair, and the sources give a partial answer.

The 2026 review above found high-dose bacopa beat ginkgo on working memory in healthy adults. (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo) For older adults, NCCIH reports that a trial of more than 3,000 people found ginkgo did not lower dementia rates or slow cognitive decline. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says) Neither herb has been shown to prevent dementia.

Both are supplements, and both can interact with medicines. A head-to-head trial of the two for everyday memory is still missing.

§ 07A fair verdict

How to weigh the bacopa line

Bacopa is the strongest reason to look at Memopezil. It has the best-built evidence of the five, and the label prints its amount. It is also under the studied dose, it has real drug interactions, and its benefits in trials were modest and slow to show.

If you take any prescription medicine, ask your pharmacist about bacopa before you order. Then read about the next line, rhodiola rosea.

FAQ

Bacopa in Memopezil: your questions

How long does bacopa take to work?

Trials of bacopa ran 12 weeks or longer before showing small gains, so expect weeks, not days. A 2014 pooled analysis used trials of at least 12 weeks. Even then, the 2025 trial of 300 mg a day found no change in its main memory tests. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analysis) (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)

Does bacopa cause diarrhea or stomach upset?

It can. The MSD Manual lists stomach upset, nausea and dry mouth, and the 2025 trial reported more digestive complaints and headaches in the bacopa group. Take the capsules with the full glass of water the label asks for, and tell your clinician if upset continues. (MSD Manual, Bacopa) (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)

Is 200 mg of bacopa enough?

It is below the 300 mg used in a 12-week trial and well below the 600 mg or more called high dose in a 2026 review. Whether 200 mg does anything in this capsule is untested. The label prints it, which lets you compare. (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial) (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo)

Can I take bacopa with blood thinners?

Ask your doctor first. The MSD Manual says bacopa may change the level of drugs handled by cytochrome P450 enzymes, and gives warfarin as an example. Nothing here replaces your prescriber's advice, and the label asks you to see a physician if you take any medicine. (MSD Manual, Bacopa)

Is bacopa the same as brahmi?

Brahmi is the Ayurvedic name for Bacopa monnieri. Some products sold as brahmi are other plants, so check the Latin name. Memopezil's label prints "Bacopa Monnieri Extract," which names the right species.

Can bacopa be taken in the morning or at night?

The label gives no time of day, only 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. Trials do not settle timing either. The label's own direction is before a meal, and a pharmacist can say whether that suits your other medicines.

What is the difference between bacopa and rhodiola?

Bacopa is a water herb with the more memory-specific research. Rhodiola is a root sold for fatigue and stress, and NCCIH finds too little reliable evidence for any use. They also differ on side effects: rhodiola is linked to insomnia, bacopa to stomach upset. (NCCIH, Rhodiola) (MSD Manual, Bacopa)
