L-Theanine in Memopezil: 100 mg of the Calm-Focus Amino Acid

Quick answer

Memopezil has 100 mg of L-theanine per serving, about 10% of the capsule and half the 200 mg used in one 4-week trial. A 2025 review found theanine alone sped up choice reaction time in the first hour. Evidence for lasting memory gains is thin, and it is taken without caffeine here.

§ 01What it is

What is L-theanine, and why is it in Memopezil?

L-theanine is an amino acid found mainly in tea leaves, and it is the calmest ingredient on the label.

Each Memopezil serving lists "L-Theanine" at 100 mg. The label does not say whether it comes from tea or is made another way. It also lists no caffeine and no tea extract, so you get the amino acid without the stimulant that usually comes with a cup of tea. (Memopezil sales page)

The sales page says L-theanine "promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness." We quote that and do not repeat it as fact. The trials below measured reaction time, mood and sleep, not drowsiness, so the claim is not what they tested.

Of the five lines, L-theanine has the simplest story: one compound, a clear dose in trials, and effects that show up within an hour or within weeks.

§ 03Dose

The label dose against the studied dose

One serving holds 100 mg. A 4-week trial in 30 healthy adults used 200 mg a day, twice as much. (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

  • Bacopa

    67% of the studied amount

300 mg a day for 12 weeks (Lopresti); 600 mg or more is the 'high dose' group (Tiemtad)300-600 mg

One serving a day is the label dose. (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)

Violet bars: what one serving holds, as printed on the label. Mint bars: the daily amount of that ingredient alone in a study; the light extension marks the higher group. We found no verified studied dose for the BCAA blend, rhodiola extract or Panax ginseng extract in our sources, so they are not drawn. A study of one extract is not a study of this product.

That makes L-theanine the one line where the label is close to a studied dose, at half. It is still not the same amount. The trial also used L-theanine on its own, and Memopezil adds four other ingredients that could change the result.

§ 04The studies

Does L-theanine help focus, stress or memory?

It shows small effects on speed of attention and on stress and sleep, and little on memory itself.

The 4-week trial. A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 30 healthy adults with an average age of 48 gave 200 mg a day of L-theanine. Depression, trait anxiety and sleep-quality scores improved compared with placebo. It was a small study. (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

The 2025 review. The authors screened 50 randomized trials of tea or its compounds and pooled 15. L-theanine alone beat placebo on choice reaction time in the first hour, with a standardized difference of -0.35. L-theanine plus caffeine showed small-to-moderate gains at hours one and two. The confidence ranges often left the size and direction uncertain, and the authors asked for research at tea-equivalent doses in everyday life. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis)

The 2014 analysis. A meta-analysis of 11 placebo-controlled studies looked at single doses of tea compounds, alone or with caffeine, on attention and mood. It studied acute effects, not months of use. (Camfield 2014, L-theanine meta-analysis)

The pattern is steady and modest. L-theanine may help you react a little faster for a short time and may ease stress. None of these studies measured memory as the main goal, so they do not support the memory claim.

§ 05A top question

Does L-theanine work without caffeine?

Yes, in the sense that trials found effects from L-theanine alone. The 2025 review reported that L-theanine on its own beat placebo on choice reaction time in the first hour. The 4-week trial used L-theanine without caffeine and saw changes in stress, anxiety and sleep scores. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis) (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

The combination with caffeine tends to be the one that gets the headlines. In the review, theanine plus caffeine showed small-to-moderate gains at hours one and two. So the pair may do more than theanine alone on attention. Memopezil is a theanine-without-caffeine product, so it falls on the "alone" side. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis)

No stimulant in the capsule does not mean no alerting effect. Ginseng and rhodiola are both linked to insomnia in NCCIH's pages. Taking the capsules earlier in the day is a reasonable habit, and it is our suggestion, not a label rule. (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (NCCIH, Rhodiola)

§ 06Caution

L-theanine safety

The trials we read described L-theanine as well tolerated. We found no source listing a serious interaction. We still do not take that as a clean bill of health.

  • It is a calming compound, so ask a pharmacist about taking it with sedatives or blood pressure medicine.
  • The studies are small and short, four weeks at the longest here.
  • Memopezil has four other ingredients, and the label caution applies to the whole capsule: consult a physician if you have a known medical condition.

§ 07A fair verdict

How to weigh the L-theanine line

L-theanine is the best-supported source of a small, quick lift in attention and a small calm. It is not a memory treatment, and 100 mg is half the dose of the trial that saw the biggest mood changes.

The last line on the label is Panax ginseng. Read it next to check the insomnia point.

FAQ

L-theanine in Memopezil: your questions

Can you take L-theanine without caffeine?

Yes. Trials tested it alone. A 4-week trial used 200 mg a day with no caffeine, and a 2025 review found theanine alone sped up choice reaction time in the first hour. Memopezil lists no caffeine at all. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis) (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

Does L-theanine work on its own?

It showed small effects. In the 2025 review, theanine alone beat placebo on choice reaction time in the first hour, but the ranges were wide. In the 4-week trial, it improved depression, trait anxiety and sleep-quality scores. Effects were modest in both. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis) (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

Is 100 mg of L-theanine enough?

It is half of the 200 mg used in a 4-week trial. Whether 100 mg gives the same effect is untested in that form. A single serving is also split with four other ingredients, so the whole capsule cannot be judged by one line. (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)

Will L-theanine make me sleepy?

The trials did not report drowsiness as the main result. The 4-week trial found better sleep-quality scores. Individual reactions vary, so try a first dose when you can sit still, and avoid driving until you know how you feel.

Does L-theanine help with brain fog?

Not shown directly. Its effects in trials were on reaction time, mood and sleep. If fog comes from poor sleep, stress or low mood, those may improve a little. Persistent fog still deserves a medical check. (NCCIH, 7 Things on Supplements and Alzheimer's)

What is the best time to take L-theanine?

Trials gave single doses for acute effects and daily doses for weeks, so timing is not settled. The Memopezil label says 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, with 8 oz of water, and prints no time of day. (Camfield 2014, L-theanine meta-analysis)

Is the L-theanine in Memopezil from tea?

The label does not say. It lists "L-Theanine" as a single line, with no tea extract and no caffeine. The vendor's photo shows tea leaves, which suggests tea, but a photo is not a source statement. Ask the order desk if the origin matters to you.
