Brain Supplements: What the Research Shows and How Strong It Is
Research on brain supplements is mixed. Bacopa has the most trial support in healthy adults, with benefits on speed of attention in pooled trials, while ginseng, rhodiola, theanine and BCAAs have small or uncertain results. NCCIH says no supplement has been shown to prevent or treat dementia, and ginkgo failed in a large trial.

§ 01The big picture
Do brain supplements work?
Some ingredients show small effects in some groups, and none has shown it can protect against dementia.
NCCIH's science summary reviews the field and reaches a cautious conclusion. A trial of more than 3,000 older adults found ginkgo did not lower dementia incidence or slow decline. A Cochrane review found no benefit of omega-3 supplements on cognition in older people without dementia. Evidence on curcumin is too limited, and B vitamins have not been shown to help over the short term. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says)
Against that backdrop, small positive findings for single ingredients in healthy adults are modest. That does not make them worthless. It means expectations should match the data.

§ 02Ingredient by ingredient
What the studies found for Memopezil's ingredients
| Ingredient | What the studies found | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Bacopa | Nine trials (518 people) of 12 weeks or more showed faster attention speed; a 2026 network analysis of 29 trials found working memory gains at 600 mg a day or more (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analysis) (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo) | Moderate, in healthy adults |
| Panax ginseng | Small trials; possible attention gains in middle-aged adults; memory benefit appeared tied to ginkgo (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) (Geng 2010, Cochrane review of ginseng) | Weak |
| Rhodiola | Reviews of fatigue; trial quality is mixed (Ishaque 2012, Rhodiola review) (Hung 2011, Rhodiola trials review) | Weak to moderate for fatigue, unclear for memory |
| L-theanine | Faster choice reaction time in the first hour; wide uncertainty (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis) (Camfield 2014, L-theanine meta-analysis) | Small |
| BCAAs | Eight studies: five found no change, three found improvement, some suggested harm (Majid 2026, BCAA systematic review) | Uncertain |
Note the doses. The label amounts for Memopezil are 200 mg bacopa, which is below the 300 to 600 mg ranges studied in the trials above. We found no verified dose range for the other lines at the label amounts.
§ 03The best-studied one
Why bacopa gets the most attention
It has the longest trial record of the five, and the record is still modest.
A meta-analysis of nine placebo-controlled trials with 518 people, all lasting 12 weeks or longer, found a faster Trail B test by about 18 milliseconds and shorter choice reaction time. The authors concluded bacopa may improve speed of attention and said a large head-to-head trial is still needed. A 2025 trial of a branded extract measured cognition, stress and fatigue in healthy adults over 12 weeks. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analysis) (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)
A 2026 network analysis of 29 trials with 2,107 healthy adults found high-dose bacopa, 600 mg a day or more, improved working memory against placebo and against ginkgo. It found no differences for sustained attention, selective attention or processing speed. The authors noted that the lack of direct comparisons limits the strength of the evidence. (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo)
Two cautions follow. These were healthy adults, not people with dementia. And the extracts were standardized products at specific doses, which a capsule with 200 mg may not match.
§ 04Reading studies
How to read a supplement study
Who took part?
Healthy volunteers tell you little about people with memory disease, and the reverse.
What was the dose and form?
A trial of a branded extract at 300 mg does not describe a different extract at 200 mg.
How long did it run?
Twelve weeks is common for bacopa. Shorter tests may miss slow effects, and longer ones are rare.
Was there a placebo?
Without a control group, any improvement could be expectation.
Who paid?
Industry funding does not invalidate a trial, but it is worth noticing.

What happened to ginkgo
Ginkgo was once the best-known memory supplement. A large trial of more than 3,000 older adults then found that it did not reduce dementia incidence or slow cognitive decline. NCCIH reports this result in its summary. It shows how a popular, plausible ingredient can fail when tested at scale. That is why a few promising small trials for any ingredient, bacopa included, should be treated as a reason to keep testing and not as a final answer. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says)
It also affects how we write: we describe ingredient evidence as it is, and we do not describe Memopezil as proven because bacopa is in it. The finished capsule has not been tested. See our claims versus evidence page for each sales claim.
§ 06Amino acids and calm
BCAAs and L-theanine in context
The two non-herbal ingredients are the least certain on memory.
Branched chain amino acids are the largest line on the label, at 540 mg of the 1,030 mg total. A 2026 systematic review of eight studies with 353 people found that five reported no significant change in cognitive function and three reported improvement, with effects depending on dose, duration and health status. Some studies even hinted at harm, and the authors asked for larger, stricter trials. A separate review explains that large neutral amino acids compete for entry to the brain, so loading one group can lower others. (Majid 2026, BCAA systematic review) (Fernstrom 2013, large neutral amino acids)
L-theanine, at 100 mg on the label, shows a different profile. A 2025 meta-analysis of 50 reviewed trials pooled 15 and found theanine alone beat placebo on choice reaction time in the first hour, though the confidence intervals often left the size and direction uncertain. The trials that used 200 mg were twice the label amount. In short, theanine looks like a calming, short-term ingredient, which is a different job from long-term memory. (Payne 2025, L-theanine meta-analysis) (Hidese 2019, L-theanine 200 mg)
§ 07A sensible stance
How to approach a brain supplement
Brand claims often cite an ingredient's best trial and leave out the rest. A fair reader asks what was left out: the people who dropped out, the trials with no effect, and the doses that differ from the product. Our job on this site is to put those missing pieces next to the claims.
Treat a supplement as a small, optional add-on to sleep, movement, diet and social life, not as a fix. Ask a pharmacist about interactions. Give it a fair 12-week test with notes, and stop if it causes problems. If memory worries you, see a clinician first. (US POINTER, JAMA 2025) (NCCIH, 7 Things on Supplements and Alzheimer's)
FAQ
Brain supplements: your questions
Do brain supplements actually work?
Some single ingredients show small effects in healthy adults, and none has shown it can prevent or treat dementia. NCCIH reviews the evidence cautiously. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says)
Which supplement has the best evidence for memory?
Bacopa has the most trials among Memopezil's ingredients, with benefits on attention speed and, at high doses, working memory in healthy adults. The evidence is still modest. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analysis) (Tiemtad 2026, Bacopa vs ginkgo)
Does ginkgo work for memory?
A trial of more than 3,000 older adults found it did not lower dementia incidence or slow decline. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says)
Do omega-3 supplements help memory?
A Cochrane review found no benefit on the cognition of older people without dementia. (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognitive Function: What the Science Says)
How long should I try a memory supplement?
Bacopa trials ran about 12 weeks, so that is a fair test window. Keep notes and stop if you have problems. (Lopresti 2025, Bacopa 12-week trial)
Are BCAAs good for the brain?
Evidence is uncertain. In eight studies, five found no change and three found improvement. (Majid 2026, BCAA systematic review)
Is a supplement better than lifestyle changes?
No evidence says so. A 2025 trial found a structured lifestyle program improved cognition more than a self-guided one. (US POINTER, JAMA 2025)
